Willem Arondéus (22 August 1894 – 1 July 1943) was a Dutch artist and author who joined the Dutch anti-Nazi resistance movement during World War II. He participated in the bombing of the Amsterdam public records office to hinder the Nazi German effort to identify Dutch Jews and others wanted by the Gestapo. Arondéus was caught and executed soon after his arrest. Yad Vashem recognized Arondéus as Righteous Among the Nations.
Their attack, which took place on 27 March 1943, was partially successful, and they managed to destroy 800,000 identity cards, and retrieve 600 blank cards and 50,000 guilders. The building was blown up and no one was caught on the night of the attack. However, due to an unknown betrayer, Arondéus was arrested on 1 April 1943. Arondéus refused to give up the rest of his team.
Arondéus was openly gay before the war and defiantly asserted his sexuality before his execution. His final words were:
“Tell the people that homosexuals are not by definition weak.”

He was also a pretty great artist

Y’know how in the Broadway production of Starlight Express they got rid of most of Belle’s stuff and she just sings her song, goes back to sleep, and is also there for Light At The End of the Tunnel? I like to think that, instead of being cut from the show, her naps just got longer. She’s actually there right now in Bochum y’all she’s just. Sleeping. In the floor.
I think it’s easy to forget how important Belle was in the original plot! (I… may be biased here….) But she RACED. She and Rusty raced in heat 2, and they did ok - but Electra and Pearl won. Belle gave Rusty the opportunity to show what he was made of, but he didn’t succeed.
But she still had his back! “The Rap” was much more of a plot point in the original story, because Rusty had LOST his race already. Was it fair for Poppa to nominate his replacement? Or should the place in the final default to Bobo, who came second? Belle advocated for Rusty, and won the argument.
Belle stayed onstage for “UNCOUPLED”, the older mentor with much more life experience than the other coaches. And ok so her advice may not be what we would consider, uhh, “good” these days, but nobody’s perfect! And Girls’ Rolling Stock kicks ass.
Belle was originally a full part of the plot… unfortunately the part of the plot that got cut in the Broadway revisions. Without a 3 heat - 3 racers structure, Rusty lost his chance to race and so did Belle. And that cut the argument in “The Rap”. Memphis Belle could have been involved in “UNCOUPLED” but it was just as easy for her to not… and then the performer didn’t need to skate much, and they could give her broken skates - I’m sure that detail really worked in the massive theatre!
